Doctor Accused of Molesting U.S. Gymnasts to Plead Guilty to Other Charges

Dr. Larry Nassar, a former team doctor for USA Gymnastics, signed the agreement June 23. He's scheduled to change his plea from not guilty to guilty on Tuesday morning in a Grand Rapids, Michigan federal court. According to the agreement, Nassar will plead guilty to three different counts relating to child pornography. Each count could be a 20 year prison sentence. I believe he deserves a lot longer than 20 years. He's a doctor, he's supposed to help with injuries, not being a pervert towards them.

Americans Don't Want Senate's Health Care Plan, but it's Unclear What They do Want

Americans really, really don't like the Senate bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. Only 17% of U.S. adults approve of the health care bill. In fact, a majority of Americans now approve of the ACA, also known as Obamacare- but just nine months ago, that wasn't true. I believe us people need to make up our minds on what we want. First we didn't approve of Obamacare but now it's more approved of compared to the Affordable Care Act.

ACLU Files Suit Against White House Election Fraud Commission

The American Civil Liberties Union is suing President Trump's vote fraud commission, charging that the body isn't following federal law requiring it to be open to the public. The lawsuit joins a growing number concerning the commission that have been filed by civil liberties groups in recent days. I believe that something should be done. This just adds more and more to Trump's plate. Hope he can handle it as our president.

Trump Son Admits to Meeting Russian Lawyer with Offer of 'Helpful' Info for Campaign

President Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., admitted Sunday to meeting last summer with a Russian attorney because she "might have information helpful to" his father's campaign. The startling admission by President Trump's son is only the latest twist in the ongoing scandal over Russian interference in the election and whether or not his campaign colluded with Russian officials. I still believe Trump had Russian officials help him win the election. This just furthers my belief that he did.

222,000 Jobs Added to U.S. Payrolls in June; Unemployment Rate Rises to 4.4%

An estimated 222,000 jobs were added to the U.S. economy in June, according to the monthly employment report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Friday. "The job gains were better than expected- most economists predicted a gain of 180,000 jobs," NPR's Chris Arnold reports. The unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.4 percent from 4.3 percent- a 16-year low that was hit in May. I believe with more jobs being added, it'll give more people different opportunities to earn some money. I also believe that the pay rate will go up more due to this increase in jobs.

Money is the Root of all Evil

Money is the root of all evil. That saying has a lot of meaning behind it. The definition of this trite saying to me is that money is the reason this world is so angry. To an extent, I can agree. I agree because people like Donald Trump come along and rub it in our face. They gloat about how much money they have, what they can afford and whatnot. But I disagree in a way. I disagree because we all need money to survive and thrive. To be able to get by. But the people that show off how much money they have are the ones that prove part of the point that money is the root of all evil. Another reason as to why money is the root of all evil is that people rob stores, banks, and even other people just for money. If it weren't for the money, people wouldn't rob others. If it weren't for money, we wouldn't define people by their social class. The way that people live separates everyone. You'll rarely ever see an upper-class high school kid hanging out with a lower-class, home-schooled kid who works two jobs just to help pay for his/her parent's bills. If money were non-existent though, a lot of things that we need in this world would not be existent. What currency would we have? What would we use to pay for things? That's why money is the root of all evil.

Trump Says 'I Think it was Russia' and 'Others Also' in Election Meddling

Appearing next to Polish President Andrzej Duda, Trump accused Russia of "destabilizing behavior" in a rare criticism of the country. Trump has said over and over that he wanted to improve relations between Russia and the United States. When Trump was asked if he could definitively say that Russia interfered in the U.S. election, Trump responded "I think it was Russia and I think it could have been other people in other countries." I believe Trump definitely won because of Russia's interference with the election. He's acting really suspicious towards the Russia involvement. If he won legitimately, he would do everything he could to prove himself.

Why Summer Jobs Don't Pay

Why can't kids today just work their way through college the way earlier generations did? The answer to that question isn't psychology. It's math. Having a summer job doesn't have the purchasing power it used to have. With people not being able to pay for college with just summer jobs, I think college expenses should either be lowered or loans should be more open towards people looking to pay off college. Summer jobs should be able to have more pay considering how busy places get during the summer.

Childhood

From 1992-2002, my father was a UFC fighter. He wasn't around much for me as a kid considering how often he was on the road. April 30, 2007 my dad comes and visits my mom and I in Rapid City. My mom was always worried about the neighborhood that I grew up in. She worried that I would become a dope dealing, street fighting criminal (I grew up on the North part of Rapid). Even though my mom and dad are divorced, she asked him to take a year and train me for self defense and grappling. So that's what my dad did. He trained me everything from how to block/dodge a punch, to how to paralyze a person with a simple tweak in a grapple. As fate would have it, August 22, 2013, I was down at summer nights hanging out with friends. They all had to leave around 9:30. When they left, I called my mom to pick me up. I told her to meet me at Hardee's. I was heading down to Hardee's through Art Alley, and there were three skinny, white, pants-sagging adults to my right. One of those guys starts walking up to me talking smack, saying, "hey, what up white boy? Got any money on you?" His friends were telling him to back off, but he refused. The first thing I could think was, "does he have a weapon on him? And if he does, how can I strip it from him?" His friends must be able to read my mind because they kept telling me, "he isn't armed, don't worry." I'm not scared, I'm not frightened, I'm more concerned as to how many punches he'd throw. I then respond to him, "no. I do not have any money on me. I'm only 13 years old." He responds, "oh yeah? Easy win then."
"If that's what you think, take a swing."
"Don't try me. You ain't grow up in the streets."
At this time, I was 5'8 and only 120 pounds, but I was quick. He still did not scare me. Growing up on the North part of Rapid, there are worse things that happen on a daily basis compared to a simple confrontation. So I start pacing and circling him, trying to find any weaknesses that I could use to my advantage. Through this process I'm thinking to myself, "okay, if he swings I will try to get him down with a hook to the rib, followed up with a few body shots and an uppercut towards his mandible." He starts raising his voice, "stop circling me and fight me, p***y!"
"Give me the best you got."
He throws a straight punch towards my face. Dodged it to the right, hit him in the center of the right rib cage and he backed up. He comes back forward and throws a body shot at me. I grab his arm, lift it up, punch him underneath the armpit (there's a nerve near your pectoral but under your arm that can make your arm go numb if hit hard enough. It's kind of like the funny bone effect but worse). He backs up, shakes out his arm and starts coming towards me again. He tries to tackle me, but he walked right into a hip toss. As soon as he hit the ground, I flipped him over and put him in a camel's clutch (submission move that effects every part of the spine). His friends are just looking on in shock as to how this 13 year old kid has yet to be touched by some punk who has an ego the size of the Himalayas. It wasn't till an officer that was patrolling downtown came in to break us up. He knew instantly that there was no way a 13 year old kid would try to pick a fight with an adult that looks like a punk. Immediately he understood my situation and he put the dude in cuffs and his two friends left. I haven't told my mom about it nor did the policeman want me to tell my mom about it because it was an act of self defense and she could change her view of me over what my father taught me.

Google Hit With $2.7 Billion Fine by European Antitrust Monitor

The European Commission has fined Google 2.42 billion euros ($2.72 billion) after finding out that the company used its dominant search engine to drive people toward another Google product, its shopping service. The fine's amount, as the European Commission says, is due to the "duration and gravity" of Google's actions. Google defends the way it handles online shopping, saying that it connects users with advertisers "in ways that are useful for both." I believe Google will be able to get its way out of the fine. With the amount of power and money Google has, there's no way they could possibly lose any sort of debate with how they have to keep themselves in check consistently.

Man Accused of Making Millions of Robocalls Faces Biggest-Ever FCC Fine

The Federal Communications Commission has proposed a $120 million fine for a Miami resident that was said to be single-handedly responsible for almost 97 million robocalls over the last three months of 2016. Officials say Adrian Abramovich auto-dialed hundreds of millions of phone calls to landlines and cell phones throughout the U.S. and Canada. Even at one point he managed to overwhelm an emergency medical paging service. Making prerecorded telemarketing phone calls without other peoples' consent is prohibited along with making telemarketing calls to emergency landlines and falsifying caller ID to disguise your identity. I believe there should be more consequences for his actions. I myself got a few calls from this telemarketer. He would keep calling back even though I told him I would file harassment if he called again. He should be jailed, fined for $120 million, and give every shred of info as to how he managed to pull that off so it could be prevented from happening again.

Schools Let Students Take Laptops Home in Hopes of Curbing 'Summer Slide'

Carrie Grant, a graduate from the Lammersville Unified School District in California, said having a device last summer made her life easier. Without the school computer, she wouldn't have had her own laptop at home to work on. She used it to stay connected with her friends through the school's Google Chat system and watched Netflix, but also saved time for academics. I believe if the Rapid City Area School District were to allow students to take home devices for educational purposes, there would be more graduates and more students would graduate with their class. Or it would be a major help for those who struggle throughout the regular school year.

Butch Cassidy Response

Response

After watching this film, I believe the reviewer has some very good point about how the film toys with the audience. The reviewer says, "Hill and Goldman are toying with the audience and its expectations." I completely agree with the reviewer. The expectations of the audience are that the film is a completely true film. Although it was portrayed to be a truthful film, instead of looking deeply into the historical record, the film was developed around the legend of Butch and Sundance. Bits and pieces of the filmed story conform to what really happened, but most of it is based on the larger-than-life tales that developed after Butch and Sundance had traveled to the Great Beyond. According to one story, Butch escaped under the cover of darkness after Sundance was killed. Although that story has been believed, the more commonly held version of events has the two outlaws committing suicide rather than facing capture. I would be able to believe both of them committing suicide rather than facing capture. I don't think Butch would go anywhere or do anything without Sundance. This reviewer had a great review of the movie. Giving all of the details on how Hill and Goldman sort of playing with the audience, the history of Butch and Sundance, and giving the reader an idea of how the film was created through Butch and Sundance.

Wall-E

There are many scenes in Wall-E that ridicule society and other issues in America in a humorous way. One way that society was ridiculed, it may not have been humorous but it was ridiculed nevertheless, is the amount of pollution in the air because of trash on the ground. With how often we throw trash on the ground, use diesel-fuel cars, and forget about recycling, Wall-E demonstrates that there would be no life on Earth because of how bad the air would be. Another set of scenes I noticed is that people live in space. With these humans living in space, they're incredibly lazy and obese. Towards the end, they're proud of themselves for being able to stand up straight. They were always glued to their chair and basically spoon-fed. They were also living in space for over 700 years. There are so many questions I have. How did their bones get impacted by living in space their whole lives? How were they able to come up with food and liquids to help them survive for 700 years in space? How is there any form of gravity in the spaceship when space has zero gravity? So many questions that might not be able to be answered. There might have been more scenes that included ridicule towards society and the downsides of how we live our daily lives, but these were the ones that I saw the most of. I believe it's pretty funny how they ridiculed the obesity problem. Seeing those obese people stand up and act surprised about it made me think of how close America is to that actually becoming true. If it weren't for the technology being advanced, we wouldn't be this lazy. That's another thing I noticed, the technological advances. There are robots and machinery that do the majority of work that us humans should be doing. It was a good representation of how the future will look.

People and the Willingness to Take Great Risks

I believe people are willing to take the big risks that they take for the adrenaline rush. They do it for the risk and the reward. Alex even admits he's an adrenaline junkie. I don't think I would ever be able to go through that adrenaline rush. Free soloing takes a lot of guts, determination and motivation. The type of qualities I do not have myself. I think that other people like to read about these incredible exploits because it's not something that you'd be able to see or read about every day. Not everybody would be able to go climb a 3,000-foot mountain free soloing. Other articles include people like JP Auclair and his skiing abilities, Danny Macaskill riding his bike in places normal people wouldn't dare set foot, Felix Baumgartner's jump from the stratosphere, the jump where Baumgartner broke the sound barrier without an aircraft, and Ben Saunders trying to walk across the North Pole. These people pull off incredible stunts that normal people didn't think was humanly possible. I couldn't ever attempt any of these stunts . These people are incredible enough to be someone else's idle.

The reviewer compares the Holocaust with this movie by saying, "finally, after he has touched off a community holocaust and destroyed the last of his employees, he casually rides out of town." I found it kind of messed up that the reviewer would even think of comparing that scene to the actual Holocaust.

Owning a Business

The businesses that I went to were Dunn Bros Coffee, Hardee's, Botichelli's and The Silver Lining Creamery. I had three main questions that I asked the business owners. These questions included, what does it take to start a business? What are the pros and cons of starting your own business? What kind of business is the best to own? The answers to the first question were all relatively similar. The business owners all said that dedication and the want to start a business is crucial. You do not need a college degree to start a business, but it would definitely help you get your business up and running quicker and it could help with the management. The second question had various answers to it, but to sum it up in one answer, the pros in starting your own business include possibly making more money compared to someone who works for a boss, you are your own boss, you can hire other people to help, no one can fire you, you can put your own ideas to practice, and you can control every aspect of your business. The cons of starting your own business include having to take a large financial risk, likely have to work long and arduous hours, a lot of time is taken up by learning details of running a business, income may not be steady, you may have to undertake unpleasant tasks like firing someone or refusing to hire a friend, and learning new disciplines like filing and bookkeeping. All three owners had the same answer for this last question. They all said that a home-based business is the best kind of business to own. It is easier to manage compared to going into work to manage your business. It is also perfect for after you retire from regular work schedule. I don't think that I would be able to start my own business. I couldn't handle the overwhelmingness of being able to make sure my workers are doing their job along with managing checks, the work place, etc. etc.. I wouldn't want to have to worry about losing all of my money to a business that didn't become successful. I'll just stick to college and the military.

Trump May Have a Lot of Money, But Documents Show he Owes a Lot, Too

President Trump may have had a troubled relationship with big commercial lenders over the years, but financial disclosure forms filed recently suggest he's still able to borrow money when he needs it. Trump's debts appear to be easily outweighed by his assets, but government ethics experts say any sizable debt represents a potential conflict of interest for a president. Former White House ethics advisor Norman Eisen says that because of the appearance of conflict, they wouldn't let President Obama refinance his modest home in Chicago. Trump allegedly owes $50 million towards the Trump Tower, owes millions on properties in Chicago, Florida and Washington, D.C. I believe if Trump wants to do any sort of financing as president, he should definitely pay off his debts. The financing could go down the drain if he doesn't pay off his debts. The more he holds it off, the more conflict of interest will rise.

Judge Delivers Blow to Trump Administration in Dakota Access Fight

I believe that Trump should have looked at all possibilities instead of going forward with it. If he would've looked it over beforehand, he wouldn't have had this issue. Especially considering the tribe has been protesting it for months.

Six Symbols

Symbols

The first symbol I found interesting was the Corvette we saw passing downtown. I found it interesting because you don't see many Corvettes in Rapid City. The Corvette is symbolized as a muscle car in the car industry, but to the people around, it is symbolized as a car of higher quality. Which means the person driving the car is probably a little on the wealthier side.
The second symbol I found interesting was the Camaro that was passing by Memorial Park. I found it interesting because it is a more common to see a Camaro instead of a Corvette, but they both can be symbolized the same way. The Camaro is also symbolized as a muscle car, but is also symbolized as a car for wealthier people. They both can be symbolized as speaking for themselves when they show up to a place. It's like an "I have arrived" type of appearance.
The third symbol I found interesting is Micah. Micah symbolizes a spontaneous, loud, and semi-annoying classmate. But he could symbolize stupidity towards other. Personally, I don't think he's stupid, but with these traits about him, others could portray this towards him.
The fourth symbol I found interesting was the man in the suit and tie. He symbolized formality towards others, while symbolizing how he needs to appear for a special occasion or interview towards himself. He was a younger man who looked a little wealthier than most. He symbolizes himself as an upper class gentleman that says "I am a VIP" with his get-up.
The fifth symbol I found interesting were the statues. The statues themselves symbolize important people that had an impact. To everyone else, these statues could symbolize a certain time period these people were relevant in, what impact they had, and what got them to become a statue.
The sixth symbol I found interesting is the guy with a cast on his arm. To everyone else, this could symbolize he's hurt. To himself, this probably symbolizes recovery and possible physical therapy. It could also symbolize the weakness in his arm after he gets the cast off and building the strength back up.

Symbolism

Symbols

1. Man in suit and tie- sybolizes formality and shows off style. Possibly symbolizes having a well-paying job.
2. Micah- symbolizes a classmate. To others, could symbolize stupidity (he gave me consent to say it.)
3. Memorial Park- symbolizes a place for little kids to go and have fun. Symbolizes the many activities kids could partake in.
4. Dunn Bros Coffee- symbolizes a coffee place for everyone to grab coffee. Symbolizes a work place for employees and a go-to place for every morning customers.
5. Corvette- symbolizes a sports car. Symbolizes higher class living or veteran who was smart with his money (old guy in the car.)
6. Statues- symbolizes an important person in history. Symbolizes a specific time period they had a major role in.
7. Downtown- symbolizes a place for people to go shopping. Symbolizes every day shopping for people who like to spend their money downtown. Could symbolize a tourist attraction.
8. Camaro- symbolizes a sports car. Symbolizes higher class living possibly or a wealthy individual.
9. Guy with a cast on his arm- symbolizes a person who is injured. Symbolizes long recovery and possible physical therapy for him.
10. Main Street Square- symbolizes a place for parents to take their kids. Symbolizes places to shop for "wants."

Future and What It Will Look Like

Response

I think within five to ten years the future will still look the same as today with just a couple more iPhones and Samsungs out. With how lazy we are as a society, I don't think that there will be any technological advancements besides the little ones in the phones or computers. I don't believe there will be any crazy new inventions that will help us save energy or keep the air from getting polluted. If I could suggest what I would like to have done within this time span though, I would try to put FlexFuel and EcoBoost towards other brands of cars to help with the environment a little more and to save people a little more money. If I could suggest having a long-term project done, I would like to have solar-powered roads. Why? We could further advance our cars by making them all electrical, eliminating gas-powered vehicles, causing pollution to decrease. It'll also help save energy in general because of the energy coming from the panels. It will cost a lot of money, but I do believe it is a good idea. Other than that, I don't believe we will do much within five to ten years. In fifty years though? I believe by then we could have cars that drive themselves. We will have a lot of advancements towards phones, computers, and other internet-related items. I also think that minimum wage pay will go up a lot, prices will definitely sky-rocket, job availability will probably go up, and the number of homeless and bankrupt people will go down. I don't believe anything too big will be done, but I do believe that there will be some change in the future. Hopefully they are good changes.

Democratic Lawmakers Sue Trump, Handing the President Another Legal Challenge

More than 190 Democrats in Congress have gotten together to sue President Trump on Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. They say that Trump is violating the U.S. Constitution by profiting from business deals involving foreign governments -- and doing so without congressional consent. In proof, Trump has sought -- and obtained -- valuable trademarks from China's government, but did not clear those transactions with Congress. In my opinion, if Trump did obtain trademarks from China without congressional consent, then he deserves to be sued. If he didn' t, he should give proof he didn't. Until either side happens though, I don't think Trump violated the Constitution.

In my opinion, it makes sense that the Social Security Administration is trying to tighten down on people getting benefits, but it's unethical to not look at a person's records before making a quick judgment on whether or not someone deserves benefits. If you went through her record, she was working her dream job and she did a good job of it. I believe SSA should look thoroughly through people's records before making a judgment.

The Covfefe Act

The Covfefe Act sounds silly, but it addresses a legitimate issue. "In order to maintain public trust in government, elected officials must answer for what they do and say; this includes 140-character tweets," said Quigley in the release. "President Trump's frequent, unfiltered use of his personal Twitter account as a means of official communication is unprecedented. If the President is going to take to social media to make sudden public policy proclamations, we must ensure that these statements are documented and preserved for future reference." I can agree with Quigley. The President of the United States should have his social media posts watched over before they're posted. If Trump would've had someone watch over the tweet he sent out, he wouldn't need to worry about this becoming a problem.

Response to Jordan Peele

Response

I agree with Peele and his thoughts on how humanity is the scariest thing to exist currently. Think about it, humans kill each other, we take advantage of each other, we brainwash each other with false realities (mainly the presidents are the ones to do this). We as people are really messed up. But when we have permission from others to do as we please, we will take the yard we are told to run (permission given) and turn it into a marathon run (going over the limit). Us humans want to be on the more popular side of things instead of believing what is right. There are many examples of this, but to sum it up, if we aren't on the popular side of the "mob", as Peele likes to refer to it as, we will feel left out and alone. When we feel left out, we can do some dangerous things to get into the "mob." Killing, stealing, lying, cheating. There's no extent we will not reach to be a part of a group. To feel accepted for something. Honestly, all of that is overrated. I believe people shouldn't worry about where the "mob" stands. Whatever you believe, stick by it. People have died for their beliefs. In today's world, you have the freedom of speech. You can speak your mind. Somebody may not like it, but forget them. Don't let their negativity get to you. Don't let peer pressure get the best of you either. That's why people do some of the stupid things they do. Other people that are a part of this "mob" will tell others that the only way to become a part of them is to go kill someone or do something really stupid that could affect their whole life ahead of them. Don't give in. Forget them. You don't need them just like they don't need you. If this was understood, humanity wouldn't be as scary as it is.

Response to Frederick Douglas

Response

The author gives a very clear view on slavery. All the detail that's mentioned from being whipped to F.D. collapsing on a hot, August day is described in a way to where you can see it happening right in front of you. Or as if you're experiencing it yourself. I got into the story when F.D. would talk about how he worked in the worst conditions, every day except for Sunday, long days and short nights. It intrigued me because he had a little bit of freedom when he was with Hugh and Sofia. He was learing to read from Sofia, and now he's working all the time for Mr. Covey. To look back at his freedom and then turn into the term "slave" must have been heart-wrenching for him. F.D. eventually attempts to escape, so Mr. Covey sends him back to Hugh. This part of the story intrigued me the most because he had a glimpse of freedom, just for it to be taken away. I couldn't imagine being in that position he was in. Working every day for an extreme number of hours, very little sleep, feeling a sense of freedom then it vanishes. He says the only reason he didn't kill himself is because he was afraid to do it and he still had hope. I don't know why he still had hope because in his position, he's literally a slave now. No freedom. Nothing. I don't think I would have been able to go on as long as he has as a slave.

President Donald Trump tweets out, "despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication... and WOW, Comey is a leaker!" In referring to Comey, Trump was citing Comey's acknowledgement that he had asked a friend to leak his memos about his conversations with the president. By referring to "total and complete vindication," Trump was more than likely thinking of Comey's confirmation on Thursday that, "there was no counterintelligence nor criminal investigation of Trump individually and that the president was not personally under investigation." I still believe there should be an investigation done on Trump. If Trump isn't afraid of hiding anything, he should allow one to be done on him so he can get it over with and prove the critics wrong.

Response to Alexis Bloomer

Response

Alexis is right for the most part. The music that is put out in this generation degrades women and glorifies drugs and crime. The one thing I can generally disagree on is her last line that says "we don't even respect our country." She didn't give any proof that we disrespect our country. I believe that, as a nation, we have the utmost respect for our country. Some of the things that are put out by certain people, like song artists and rappers, do have an influence on how our country is viewed as a whole, but it doesn't mean we disrespect our country. If she were to give evidence of how students aren't required to stand up for the Pledge, then that's an argument I would be willing to contribute to. I do believe that we should all be required to stand for the Pledge, but this response isn't about that. Alexis is correct. As a country, we show little to no respect for our elders and women. Women aren't being offered an arm to their car late at night like they should be, and elders aren't treated right in nursing homes. We cuss at young ages to show assertiveness, we post other people's agony and misery on Facebook and YouTube, and we don't show up for work throughout half of the week because of lazy work ethic. If this country was able to put in the work, get a good education, and learn the difference between empathy and sympathy, this would be a great nation to be in. Until that occurs though, this nations isn't what it once was.

Donald Trump's big Problem isn't Jim Comey, It's Donald Trump

I don't think Trump is helping his situation when he's trying to get the investigation called off. A majority of people believe that Trump fired Comey for his own safety instead of doing it for the country. Trump suggests that most of the FBI wanted Comey gone, but has no proof of that. I believe that Jim Comey got fired for Trump's safety regarding the truth. Trump could have came out with the truth when this started.

Music

Music

I believe that the audience should sing the National Anthem at sporting events or any other event requiring the National Anthem instead of having a professional or one person sing it. Getting the whole crowd involved shows courage and bravery on behalf of the United States. How does it display these? People normally don't like to be a part of a group or anything involving group activity. Also, people don't like to sing in front of other people normally. But no matter what, getting a crowd together for a little choir doesn't need any practice to sound as amazing as any professional. Maybe one person may sound bad, but as a group, it's perfectly on key. It sounds absolutely amazing. I believe everyone should come together to sing as a group. It would be very interesting to see the talent we could display as one.

Rapid City

Rapid City

Rapid City, South Dakota. Home of the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and multiple caverns and sites. With all of these wonderful places to visit in Rapid City, you'd assume that I would say Rapid City is the best place to live. That I am content with staying in Rapid City my entire life. That would be a false statement though. In truth, I think Rapid City may be a great place for people of younger ages to dwell. If you grow up in Rapid City, you will understand when I say that teenagers and adults find it hard to live in Rapid City.
The reason that younger ages would dwell well in Rapid City is because they have open room to adapt, yet everything is close to home. If the kids wanted to get out and be active, they could walk to Sioux Park and it would take them five minutes. Everything a kid could want or need is within a five to twenty minute drive in Rapid City. Adults would find it hard to dwell for many reasons though.
Some reasons that adults and teens would find it hard to prosper in Rapid City is because of limited job opportunities, little living space and low-paying jobs. Rapid City, or just South Dakota in general, is filled with stressed teens who work thirty plus hours a week during school, full-time during summer, and get low pay for it. Adults work full-time normally, if not two part-time jobs with forty plus hours a week with low income, making just enough to pay for a roof over their head, clothes, and food. I believe that if a minor export in the United States was brought to South Dakota for work, South Dakota would become a better place for adults to prosper. The wage pay would increase, the job opportunities would increase, and the state's wealth would definitely increase. Until that happens though, kids of young ages, I believe, are the only ones that would thrive in Rapid City.

Who Am I?

Who Am I?

My name is Skyler Herrick. I am seventeen years old. Some things I particularly enjoy include biking, lifting, working on cars, and baseball. Ever since I learned how to ride a bike without training wheels, there was a connection between a bike and me. I would bike everywhere I went. Biking helps me get away from reality when I need to escape. The wind in my face, the helmet hair, the sore legs from a long day. All of these are what really define why I love to bike.
Lifting began for me during my time in sports around middle school. I wasn't a big lifter back then. Didn't take it too seriously. But my coach told me that lifting would improve my athetic ability on and off the field. I started taking lifting more seriously last year. Six days a week, twenty-five minutes of cardio and an hour of lifting have gotten me to where I am today. As time goes on, I hope to achieve much higher personal records and put on muscle.
My mom introduced me to a '57 Chevy Impala when I was five years old. She showed me the interior, exterior, everything that there was to show. When I started learning about how a car worked, I got interested in the exterior part of it. Adding on parts, switching out parts, upgrades, repairs. I got to first working on my own car as of two years ago. I had a beaten down '00 Oldsmobile Bravada. I put a lot of time and effort into that car. Replaced the transmission, the front axles, the spark plugs, the battery and a few ball joints that got sheared. Working on cars is another escape away from reality for me. It gives me something to do along with not having to worry about anything else stressful.
I started tee-ball at the age of four. I played baseball up until sophomore year. Ten years in total. Baseball is a sport that I really connected with. I was a catcher for a year, short-stop for a year, center fielder for two years and a pitcher for six years. I've been switched every now and again, but these sum up overall how long I've played each position. Pitching was so much fun for me. If I was able to continue playing, I could potentially hold a state record for fastest fastball pitch for a minor. I was pitching anywhere from 80-82 miles per hour my freshman year. I've come to love playing the sport more than doing almost anything else. If I am able to get back into baseball for my last year of high school, I most certainly will.
